Smokeless Tobacco: Ingredients and Risks

Filed under: Shopping And Product Reviews — Tags: , , — admin @ 11:38 am
Anne Clarke asked:

The ingredients in smokeless tobacco are, unfortunately, just as bad for you as the ingredients in tobacco you smoke. There is of course, nicotine, as well as many kinds of carcinogens the primary carcinogens in smokeless tobacco are called nitrosamines. But this is not where it ends.

Other than nitrosamines, there are sweeteners used as ingredients in smokeless tobacco, mainly because tobacco itself has a very bitter taste to it. The sweeteners can, if the cigarettes have enough in them, can also promote tooth decay.

Then there are also abrasives included in the ingredients in smokeless tobacco. This substance comes from the tobacco leaves themselves. The abrasive materials in your mouth can wear down the surfaces of someone’s teeth, as well as causing abrasions in the mouth. When this happens an even larger amount of nicotine is passed directly into the bloodstream.

Another main one of the many ingredients in smokeless tobaccos is salt, believe it or not. Which can damage the kidneys and cause irregular blood pressure.

It has been widely claimed that there are hundreds of other chemicals that are terrible for your health as well as being carcinogenic.

In short, chewing tobacco is no safer than regular tobacco for you because of the ingredients in smokeless tobacco. There is a high risk of developing mouth cancer, throat cancer, dental disease, decreased ability to perform in athletic activities and many more.

If you chew, enjoy your smokeless tobacco, but also be aware of the ingredients in smokeless tobacco and realize that it is still a bad habit by the same standards as cigarettes or cigars.

Penile Cancer - The Smokeless Tobacco Connection

Zachary Malott asked:

Cancer - the very word cancer gives some people a weak feeling in the knees. Why? The survival rates for most cancer is not very good. Most people today are more than aware of this and thus the fear associated with the term cancer.

Penile cancer is the topic of this article. Cancer of the ***** is something that most men do not wish to think about much less discuss. Unfortunately, it does exist and there are specific causes that lead to it. If the reader wishes to investigate the several causes of penile cancer they can enter the term into any search engine of their choice.

The causative factor for penile cancer that we are concentrating on for this article is smokeless tobacco. Tobacco plays a very important role in squamous cell cancer of the *****. Chewing tobacco or using dry or moist snuff.

Just how important a role does smokeless tobacco play in the development of penile cancer? One study has shown that 34% of tobacco chewers as compared to those who do not use tobacco in a controlled study developed penile cancer. This percentage was over twice the percentage for those who do not use tobacco.

All forms of tobacco use have been shown to significantly increase the incidence of penile cancer [BRITISH JOURNAL OF UROLOGY (London), Volume 75, Number 3: Pages 375-377, March 1995].

Let us cover a general examination of the role tobacco use in any form contributes to the susceptibility to penile cancer. Penile cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the *****. Anything that increases your chance of getting a disease is called a risk factor.

Risk factors of tobacco use in any form in developing penile cancer.

The ***** is a rod-shaped male reproductive organ. ***** and urine pass from the body through the *****. It contains two types of erectile tissue (spongy tissue with blood vessels that fill with blood to make an erection):

1) Corpora cavernosa: The two columns of erectile tissue that form most of the *****.

2) Corpus spongiosum: The single column of erectile tissue that forms a small portion of the *****. The corpus spongiosum surrounds the urethra (the tube through which urine and ***** pass from the body).

The erectile tissue is wrapped in connective tissue and covered with skin. The glans (head of the penis) is covered with loose skin called the ********.

There are several factors that can cause penile cancer but the focus of this article is that of tobacco use in any form.

Possible signs of penile cancer include:

!) sores

2) discharge

3) bleeding.

These and other symptoms may be caused by penile cancer. Other conditions may cause the same symptoms. A doctor should be consulted if any of the following problems occur:

1) Redness

2) irritation

3) a sore on the *****.

4) a lump on the penis

The following tests that examine the ***** are used to detect and diagnose penile cancer:

1) Physical exam and history: An exam of the body to check general signs of health, including checking the ***** for signs of disease, such as lumps or anything else that seems unusual.

2) A history of the patient’s health habits and past illnesses and treatments will also be taken.

3) Biopsy: The removal of cells or tissues so they can be viewed under a microscope by a pathologist to check for signs of cancer

The chance of recovery and treatment options depend on the following:

1) The stage of the cancer.

2) The location and size of the tumor.

3) Whether the cancer has just been diagnosed or has come back.

Anyone who desires further information of the dangers of smokeless tobacco and the effects it has on the human body can review a FREE eBook on the subject at the following link:

“Stop Using Smokeless Tobacco Now!” [http://www.stopsmokeless.com/freebook.php]

In summary, the use of tobacco in any form is a risk factor for penile carcinoma. Tobacco may exert its action through its metabolites, or directly after systemic absorption. Use of more than one form of tobacco multiplies the risk of development of penile carcinoma.

Florida Smokers Tobacco Lawsuit

Todd Going asked:

Smoking has long been thought to cause a number of serious health problems, but most cigarette companies often deceived the public and the government about the true danger of their products. In fact, after decades of marketing cigarettes as safe, even healthy, the truth began to trickle out. By 2006, a Florida Supreme Court adopted a number of findings that will form the foundation of further smoking litigation cases. These findings include:

Florida Supreme Court, No. SC03-1856 Engle vs. Liggett Group, page 8

• At present, the nicotine found in tobacco is deemed to be addictive

• The defendants (i.e. the cigarette and tobacco companies) made available defective cigarettes that were “unreasonably dangerous”

• The defendants intentionally mislead smokers with deliberately false statements intended to deceive them about the dangers of smoking • Defendants prevented their customers from learning about the health effects and addictive nature of cigarettes by deliberately concealing and omitting material that would have helped them form a better understanding of the risks of smoking.

While the class action ruling against tobacco companies de-certified and dismissed, this is actually beneficial to individual smokers because now they can file lawsuits on their own behalf to recover extensive damages.

Florida smokers are in a unique position to capitalize on this recent decision. While the initial objective of the Florida smokers class action lawsuit was to allow large groups of smokers to band together and get compensation for their injuries and hardship, individual lawsuits can now actually provide more restitution for victims of the greed and deception of tobacco companies.

The laws surrounding Florida tobacco law are intentionally confusing and complicated. The tobacco companies hope that the perceived difficulties of these legal actions will frustrate and deter victims from pursing the proper avenues for justice. The labor and work of dedicated legal professionals means that it is easier than ever to file a claim in Florida, but there is only a limited amount of time for potential litigants to take action.

The Florida Supreme Court has settled the issue that smoking is dangerous and tobacco companies intentionally misled the public about the dangers of smoking. The time for justice is at hand.

Custom Dash Gauges, Pods and Dash Covers - A Guide

Valerie Mellema asked:

Customizing your ride does not stop with the exterior. There are many ways to add style and function to the interior of your ride. While interior lighting, custom shifter knobs, steering wheels and seats offer you many benefits, one area that must not be overlooked is your dash. Dash gauges offer you numerous benefits, allowing you to track every nuance of vehicle performance, from oil pressure/temperature to turbo and supercharger operation and your RPMs. Custom gauge pods and dash covers will give you the look you need and house your accessories.

Why should you purchase custom dash gauges for your ride? Most automakers provide very few gauges in the dash. The speedometer, a temperature gauge, the odometer and the fuel gauge are all that the OEM usually includes. While that small selection is fine for commuters and standard drivers, those who add performance enhancements to their vehicles usually require more in the way of information.

Custom dash gauges provide you with a wide range of information. For instance, many vehicles do not have a tachometer today; even straight shift models sometimes lack this fundamental gauge. You can purchase aftermarket tachometers that even provide you boots information. Water temperature, oil temperature, exhaust temperature, air-fuel mixture readings, voltmeters for gauging your battery power and oil pressure gauges are all more than handy. For the serious tuner, these gauges are vital.

To hold those gauges, you’ll need gauge pods. These are aftermarket housings that adhere or ***** to your dash or A column. Custom gauges fit inside the pods, providing a sleek, streamlined look for your interior. You’ll find pod clusters in sets of two and three, or even more. In addition, you can choose from a wide range of different colors. Different styles mount in different locations. While the top of your dash is the traditional place to mount gauges, the A column offers you ready access to the information and a great race car look.

Another popular option is that of gauge faceplates. These are custom colored gauge covers that fit over your existing gauges. Dash cluster removal is necessary for installation of these babies, though; make sure you know what you are doing before you choose to install them in your ride. White, red, blue and several other colors are available, as are “glow” effect faceplates.

Additionally, dash covers give you a way to protect your dash from the damaging effects of sunlight, while still maintaining a great look. Dash covers are custom made to fit your OEM dash and can be configured with numerous side panels and add-ons. These are available in several different colors, though black and tan are the two favorites.

Regardless of the exact gauge configuration you choose, you’ll find that installing gauges, dash covers and gauge pods can add a great look to your ride, as well as providing you with the information that you need about engine performance. A true tuner needs all the information available, in order to ensure proper engine performance.

J Seymour asked:

You’ve probably heard by now that if you chew tobacco, the best course of action is to stop chewing tobacco as quickly as possible. In fact, the only people that are likely to want you to continue with this bad habit are those that make their living from the production and sale of chewing tobacco. Addiction though is a word that is tough to lie with and one that is commonly associated with all forms of tobacco - for good reason.

Why You Chew Tobacco

You probably didn’t wake up one day thinking it would be a good idea to get addicted to chewing tobacco. Some people start because others around them do it and they believe that they can stop any time. Knowing why you began this habit is only half the battle. You need to know why you continue chewing tobacco despite the well documented risks to your health. Generally speaking, addiction is the one word that comes to mind first.

Health Risks of Chewing Tobacco

Others begin because they are trying to kick the habit of smoking tobacco. For whatever reason they feel that exchanging one addiction for another is the safer choice. This is not necessarily the case but it can be argued that chewing tobacco rather than smoking it impacts only the person doing the chewing rather than those who live and work around him.

Methods to Help You Stop Chewing Tobacco

It doesn’t really matter why you began but what you do now to get the tobacco chewing help you need to overcome this addiction. There are a few well respected methods that are meant to help you break this habit without breaking the bank.

The Replacement Method

This method has been effective in helping quite a few - for some this is how they began chewing tobacco in the first place. What it entails is that you stop chewing tobacco and start chewing gum. You can either go with specialty gums for those addicted to tobacco or regular chewing gum. Your best option may be to start with the specialty gum and slowly ween yourself off that.

Cold Turkey

Not a favorite but can be effective if you have the will power to pull it off. Some believe that those who stop chewing tobacco cold turkey are less likely to return to the habit when the going gets rough. Others know without a doubt that they will never make it without serious help.

Self Hypnosis

Learning to hypnotize yourself so that you are in a better mental state to free yourself of this addiction and stop chewing tobacco once and for all might be the best gift you can give yourself. Hypnosis enables you to deal with the withdrawals you may experience as well as finding the power within yourself to resist the temptations of your addiction.

The final decision is in your hands. Are you ready to get control of your life back? Are you willing to do whatever it takes? Get the tools you need today to help you stop chewing tobacco once and for all.

Term Life Insurance for Tobacco Users

Sharon Taylor asked:

There are several requirements you must meet when obtaining any kind of insurance. Taking out term life insurance is no exception. For the most part, insurance companies want to make sure you start out healthy before issuing you a policy. Premiums are based on your lifestyle and what your medical history is like. The cost of your premium is based on your age, gender and even occupation. Tobacco use has always been of concern when you are applying for term life insurance .

Tobacco use in any form already sets you apart from non-users. Some insurance companies do not distinguish between the form and frequency of your tobacco use. If you are a person who smokes an occasional cigar you are treated the same as a person who smokes two or three packs of cigarettes per day. Despite this unfair categorization, there are some companies that do make the distinction. The key is to find these select insurance companies that individualize their rates. These select companies base their premiums upon the type of tobacco and frequency of usage. They make a clear distinction between the use of cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, pipes, smokeless tobacco, nicotine gum, marijuana or a nicotine patch to quit your smoking habit. If you smoke marijuana, you must also disclose that you use drugs on your application form.

Lifestyle Discrimination?

While automatic higher premiums set for smokers are seemingly unfair and may even be viewed as lifestyle discrimination, it is also important to understand the perspective of insurance companies. Generally, smokers miss work more often than non-smokers due to respiratory problems. It is believed, although not clinically proven, that smoking lowers the immune system defenses, therefore causing smokers to be more susceptible to certain smoke related illnesses than non-smokers. Smoking has also always been believed to cause premature death. Ailments such as lung cancer, high blood pressure, heart attacks, emphysema, severe asthma, stroke, and other forms of cancer are all associated to nicotine use. Current studies have also found a connection between heavy tobacco use and Alzheimer’s disease. Certainly one can compare the consistent use of a known carcinogen to someone who is employed at a job considered to be “hazardous duty.” Both are subject to higher premiums due to higher risk for insurance companies to carry you.

Tobacco Use and Low Cost Term Life Insurance

If you are smoker who has tried to obtain term life insurance in the past, you have probably been disappointed by the high premiums quoted to you. In recent years some insurance companies have opted to offer low cost term life insurance for tobacco users. Smokers or nicotine users are now eligible for 10, 15, 20 or 30 year term periods at low rates. For example, as long as a smoker is in otherwise excellent health and is at a reasonable weight, he or she may obtain $250,000.00 worth of coverage for about $40 per month over a 10 year period.

The best thing to do would be to research out companies and their policies for tobacco users. By shopping out the different insurance companies, you are sure to find one that does not penalize you excessively for tobacco use. Doing an internet search is the fastest way to obtain a quote online as many companies are now doing “Insta-quotes” that only take minutes. Tobacco users can now afford to protect their families at much more affordable rates and doing due diligence in shopping out your quotes will save you money in the long run.

Tobacco Companies Have Hidden the Dangers of Smoking For Years

Mark Hester asked:

Toward the end of 2006 you may have noticed that ads detailing smoking’s adverse health effects started appearing in newspapers across the country. This was in response to an August of 2006 ruling by a federal judge that the tobacco industry had actively engaged in racketeering practices. The judge stated that the industry had engaged in a decades-long conspiracy to hide the dangers of smoking from their users. Tobacco companies were actually ordered to take out newspaper ads criticizing their own product.

The judge ruled that the conspiracy started as early as 1953, when a group of tobacco company executives met together at the Plaza Hotel in New York City and developed a plan to counter the public’s health concerns about smoking. The judge also ruled that even after the 1964 Surgeon General’s report linked smoking to lung cancer, tobacco companies continued to deny and purposely distort many serious dangers of smoking their products.

Shockingly it was also ruled that the tobacco industry actively marketed their products to youth. That even though the tobacco industry claims it does not want children to smoke, the companies were caught tracking youth behavior and preferences, thereby ensuring that “marketing and promotion reaches youth,” even hiding from them the serious dangers of smoking while their young bodies were still developing.

The tobacco industry was also faulted for publicly denying that second-hand smoke is dangerous. The judge cited internal acknowledgment that this indeed was the case. In 1999, the Clinton administration accused the tobacco industry of racketeering as part of a coordinated plan to deceive the public about the dangers of smoking, and to cover up the knowledge they had to the contrary.

Under the ruling, the tobacco companies were also ordered to stop using such descriptions as “low tar,” “light,” “ultra light,” “mild,” or “natural,” or any other descriptions that might seem as if these cigarettes posed less of a health hazard or in any way were an attempt to downplay the dangers of smoking them.

While this ruling was a victory for many anti-smoking and anti-tobacco campaigns, many commented on how long it took for the government to respond to tobacco’s use and on how long the actual case itself took as well. Others felt that perhaps the court was not punitive enough with the industry. “We are pleased with the court’s finding of liability on the part of the defendants, but disappointed that the court did not impose all of the remedies sought by the government,” the Justice Department said in a written statement. “Nevertheless, we are hopeful that the remedies that were imposed by the court can have a significant, positive impact on the health of the American public.”

To many it seemed to be a hollow victory, but it still did some good in highlighting the real dangers of smoking that even the tobacco industry itself could not - or was no longer allowed to - deny.

What is the Best Air Purifier to Remove Tobacco Smoke?

Cris Stanford asked:

When asked, “What is the best air purifier to remove tobacco smoke?” I have to say, “There’s not a simple answer.”

Effectively removing tobacco smoke, allergens and odors mainly depends on the type of air purifier you purchase, how powerful it is and even where you put it in your home or work place.

But, what is the best air purifier to remove tobacco smoke is an excellent question. Besides the unpleasant odor, second hand tobacco smoke can cause serious allergy and respiratory problems. It’s comprised of over 4,000 chemicals, with around 40 known carcinogens. Anything you can do to cut down on the detrimental health statistics is a good idea.

There are around half a dozen varieties of air purifiers in a variety of sizes and shapes. The two main types of systems are mechanical air purifiers such as high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters and electrostatic filtration systems, such as an ionic purifier. They each have their own advantages and disadvantages and some are more effective than others at removing tobacco smoke.

Activated carbon filters and ozone generator air purifiers are the most effective systems available for removing tobacco smoke odor. However, neither is particularly effective at reducing the airborne allergens and toxins.

An activated carbon filter involves charcoal treated with oxygen, which opens up million of tiny pores that greatly increase the filter pad surface area. The activated carbon air purifier filter then works like a sponge to remove the smell of tobacco smoke and soak up harmful toxic gases. Although charcoal air filters need to be changed regularly, filters are generally not very expensive.

Many of the activated carbon air purifiers are combined with HEPA technology. This is good, because they’re 99.9 percent effective at eliminating airborne allergens down to three tenths of a micron. To illustrate how small 0.3 microns is, consider that there are over 600 microns in this period.

Ozone air purifiers are also effective at removing tobacco odor, but they’re not very effective at removing smoke allergens and toxins. Plus, these air purifiers are controversial. Many experts believe ozone generators are harmful to human health.

Since ozone is the main toxic chemical found in smog, California has even issued a warning against ozone generators, stating, “People should avoid using indoor air cleaning devices that produce ozone.” Just like tobacco smoke, long term exposure to ozone can cause irritation to the eyes, nose and throat, as well as respiratory problems and even permanent lung damage.

Most marketers for ozone generators will tell you there’s no need to worry. They say you can use a low setting and you don’t need to run the device all day. But that doesn’t really eliminate the problem. And you don’t want to just add more pollutants to the tobacco smoke.

So, what is the best air purifier to remove tobacco smoke? Once you take everything into consideration, a good HEPA air purifier combined with an activated charcoal filter would be best. With this type of air purifier, you can effectively remove the odor and reduce airborne allergens and toxins from tobacco smoke with only positive benefits to your health.

Is Your Dash Leaking Dash Fluid?

Tommy Sessions asked:

This morning when you, Bill, and Billy Jr. got into your Grand Marquis to go to church, you felt something ‘cold’ on your foot.

You look down and see ‘green’ stuff in the floor board…

and another drop falls onto your left foot, just above your shoe, and spreads on your stocking…

and you noticed it was a little warmer.

Your first thought, as you spoke aloud, was, “Is my car coming apart?”

Then you turned to Billy Jr. in the back…”What did you do to my car last night?”

Course he denies having done anything to the car on his date, and rightly so, this time.

Your car is not necessarily coming apart…You’re heater core is leaking.

The heater core is mounted inside a plastic case, along with the air conditioner evaporator core.

Coolant from the radiator flows through the heater core by way of a couple of hoses, then back to the engine.

This is where you get the ‘heat’ from when you turn your heater on…a little fan blows across the heater core and causes hot air to attack you in the passenger compartment of your car.

When the heater core gets a hole in it, the coolant will leak out…
just like the radiator in front of the engine.

Since it’s mounted under the dash, it naturally leaks onto the floor…and if there is a small foot there, it will probably drip onto it. :-(

There is a long story about *why* the heater core gets a hole in it, but for this article, let’s just say it is like the radiator, except it’s smaller.

Some of the chemicals in the anti-freeze/summer coolant causes them to deteriorate.

If you will flush the cooling system every other year you can just about eliminate this problem…isn’t that nice to know?
